Help our Autistic/Diabetic Son, Sam

I am in Augusta tonight and am really heartsick. We have a contract to sell my parents’ home on December 19, a week before Christmas for financial reasons because of my unwarranted firing by UGA. My parents moved here in 1986 and my sons, Jim and Sam, have spent every Christmas here. Jim used to spend weeks here with his grandparents.

I inherited this home after the death of my parents. Some people have a house in the mountains, some have a house at the lake, and we had a house in Augusta where we spent all the holidays together as a family.

Our family consists of my husband and myself, our oldest son, Jim, and our younger son, Sam. Sam is a handsome 22-year old severely autistic young man who also has fully insulin dependent Type 1 diabetes.  He lives at home and requires full-time care, an unpaid job my husband has been doing for the last 21 years. To give you a scope of the severity of Sam’s autism, he communicates entirely by quoting the Thomas the Tank Engine video series.

Sam loves to come here more than anyplace in the world and, right now, is asking to come to Augusta. There are so few places Sam can go because of his autism and he happily sings, dances, and is most expressive when he is here.

Sam’s future is in jeopardy as he requires full-time care; he is helpless on his own. The loss of my job forced me to use my savings and retirement to currently provide for my family. This is why it is of the upmost importance that UGA right the wrong it has committed. In the meantime, we have started a GoFundMe account for 22-year old Sam’s care for now and the remainder of his long life. Currently, this is our only alternative for Sam.

You can help by spreading the word about Sam’s GoFundMe account and contributing as you are able. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!
